We are pleased to announce that our longstanding client Ericsson Media Solutions won the ACE exhibits award at NAB 2018 in Las Vegas.

The design challenge was to develop an engaging, demonstration focused experience and a new ‘look and feel’ for Ericsson’s 3,500 square feet (325 square meters) presence at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB 2018).

 

We worked closely with the Ericsson team to design a stand that focused on the customer journey and on how visitors would interact across multiple touchpoints in south upper hall of the Las Vegas Convention Centre.

 

Digital surfaces, materials and textures were carefully selected to express an industrial, yet elegant look and feel, all aimed at providing a creative space that enhanced the overall visitor experience. The result was an environment with a beautiful juxtaposition between an industrial feel and Ericsson’s visionary product demonstrations.

 

The industry awards recognise creative design excellence, the overall visitor experience, product presentations and the quality of stand build – and use the following criteria

 

  • Attention Grabbing: The exhibit is designed in a way that grabs the visual attention of attendees. Use of color, lighting, imagery, A/V, motion, graphics and text, reasonable sound, unique materials, etc.
  • Use of Space: The booth space is designed in a way that makes entrance, navigation and exit easy and ensures the best experience for visitors
  • Product Presentation: Products are presented in an appealing, accessible, informative and interactive manner
  • Engagement:  Attendees are drawn into the booth and are engaged by activities, proactive booth staff, presentations, hands-on demonstrations, games, etc., and there is adequate room to meet with clients

Capturing moments


As a keen photographer, our Graphic Designer, Kat, is continuously inspired by the power of capturing moments with camera and film. A technique that has been enhanced over hundreds of years, the method of photography translates complex messages into enticing images.
 
A fan of all things quirky, Kat is inspired by photographers who capture twisted fairytales (think Tim Burton-esque) such as the work produced by Annie Leibovitz and Rosie Hardy. In using a camera, the environment and the digital tools available to them, this style of composite photography allows them to create whole new worlds and messages. A technique which adds character to marketing and brings it to life.
 
In using powerful imagery in all of our creative designs, we understand the impact strong visuals can have on audiences. Whether shown on the front cover of a brochure or large-scale exhibition graphic print, it is essential to select images that communicate the overall core message. This principle is something that everyone at Design Original recognises and identifies with. We are all inspired to deliver the most excellent and impactful visuals that leaves viewers with a lasting impression.

Through his role as Managing Director, Will, has been fortunate enough to travel the world. Whether attending exhibitions in the depths of foreign deserts or meeting clients in their international premises; Will has experienced many wonderful things over the years. During his travels, something that has constantly inspired Will is how the landscape surrounding him has continuously revolutionised.
 
With a particular interest in Architecture, the Flatiron Building in New York is a structure that has always been an inspiration to Will. With its unique build that resembles a traditional flat iron, it has established itself as an outstanding landmark in the city skyline. With the advancement of technology, the economy and culture, the landscape surrounding the building has significantly changed over time. Yet, the iconic building remains as important today as it did when it was first built. Teaching us that revolutionary design and dedication can have a long-standing impact on the world around us.
 
It is this belief to impress, be recognised and be original that has shaped the direction of Design Original and everything we produce. Taking inspiration from fellow designers, architects and artists, we pride ourselves on the professionalism, commitment and skill that goes into each piece of work we create.

Through his role as Project Manager, Harvey, is exposed to many people, places and experiences. From travelling to Monaco to set-up a bespoke event to finding ways for how to contain 200 stress balls into an interactive exhibition stand game; Harvey’s varied position gives him daily insight into lots of weird and wonderful tasks.
 
It’s this passion for meeting new people and visiting new places, that has allowed Harvey to absorb lots of information that he is able to pass on to clients. In understanding different cultures and the logistics of exhibiting in countries all over the world, this knowledge is shared with clients and contacts alike.
 
The best creative marketing is shaped around who the end product, service or message is going too. In gaining experiences with different people and settings, it helps us to direct new and exciting ways to engage varied audiences. Having an appreciation for diverse behaviours, expectations and trends; this new found knowledge helps us to present unique ideas that stand out from the crowd.

Nothing beats the proud feeling you get when standing across from a finished exhibition stand, a sensation that our experienced Director of Operations, Alex, is all too familiar with. Over the years, Alex has managed engaging exhibitions spaces in all shapes and sizes and no matter what the initial plans were, the dedication to achieve a stunning end result remains the same.
 
It’s all too easy to walk through an exhibition hall and forget the lengthy process that each space has gone through to get to where it is. Through all the planning, coordination and management that goes into a stand build; Alex knows only too well what it takes to develop a marvellous result that satisfies the client and their audiences.
 
The importance of producing something amazing – that surpasses expectations, wow’s it’s visitors and has great attention to detail, is something that inspires Alex and all of the Design Original team. Understanding the impact an exhibition space has on everyone involved, is something that we all hold dear in the way we approach every job that comes through the door. We love to impress!

Street smart: transformational advertising


A great bridge between three dimensional design and graphic design, the clever approach of shaping advertising boards into useful structures has made the IBM advertising boards come to life. Featured in urban settings around Paris, the outdoor ads were designed to be “not only beautiful, but useful to city dwellers” too.
 
An idea that has inspired our Exhibitions Designer, Raoul, when considering new ways of how to bring engaging spaces to life. In encouraging the general public to interact with the visible concept, it extends the brand message in a positive light. As people sit on the bench, use the ramp or take shelter from the rain, you can expect that their experience will be shared and observed by others – something that is particularly identifiable through social media. As a result, people post about their experiences, spreading the message through various online marketing channels.
 
In the generation we live in today, information and experiences are shared in various ways. What this campaign shows us, is that it has created a starting point where the communication begins.In placing innovative advertising in a quirky and exposed setting, it opens itself to awareness from a constant flow of people. A similar situation to what is observed at exhibitions and events. This is something that Design Original consistently question when constructing engaging designs; maintaining the importance of creating an environment that people want to interact with, talk about and remember as a fun experience.

As living beings, every single day we are exposed to hundreds of sensory experiences, from the strong smell of fresh coffee first thing in the morning, to the sound of rain beating against the windows on a typical British autumn day. We are influenced by the environment that surrounds us.
 
During his time living in Canada, our Graphic Designer, Zak, made an exciting experiential discovery of his own, which came in the form of beautifully packaged box. A lover of all things sweet, Zak, first came across the s’mores biscuit kit, after spotting their charming illustrated packaging in a local supermarket. The product itself is intelligently put together with contemporary typography, monochrome graphics and sharp flat colours.
 
In understanding the impact packaging has on people, from first impressions to overall impression, it allows us to consider how to entice and encourage potential consumers through the use of impactful design. By outlining a key brand identity and considering the user journey, it helps to shape the end result of significant brand loyalty, a theory which is applied to all the work created by Design Original. We understand the importance of consistent revolutionary design.

On first inspection you may be quick to disregard the straightforward sculptures created by Richard Serra. Using sheets of steel to form the expansive 14ft high walls, the artist has intentionally spaced out the seven sculptures, to encourage visitors to enter a minimalist space.
 
In forming a solid sculpture that impresses visitors with its unsophisticated beauty, you can’t help to recognise the intelligence behind presenting a method in the most simplistic form; an approach that has inspired our Junior Exhibition Designer, Luke, with his own design work.
 
The work motivates us to look deeper within design to find the detail and the balance that is needed to make a truly stunning and inviting space for users. By adding small details within the function and layout of exhibition designs, these greatly improve the user experience in how they interact with the space. A technique which is continuously considered by the Design Original team, in how we map out how visitors approach and travel within the exhibition space.

As Mass adoption starts to become a thing of the past, there is a renewed emphasis on originality and true personalisation in marketing promotion. With the rise in access to personalised products and experiences increases, the demand on brands to incorporate this strategy into their marketing is ever apparent.
 
Our Creative Director – Design & Strategy, Brendon, was particularly impressed by Tam airlines in how they applied this trend for their on board passengers. Connecting with passengers’ Facebook profiles, the airline created each customer a unique in-flight magazine that featured content on all of their favourite things. From articles on their favourite musicians, to travel recommendations; the magazine left readers feeling connected and amazed by the level of detail they had gone too.
 
We believe that this rising trend is something that can’t be ignored. Linking to multiple marketing channels and utilising public data, is a method that can be showcased across various marketing platforms. It is this technique that has inspired the whole team in how we go about delivering a personal experience to all of our clients and the work we produce for them.

The sweet sound of success


Competing in the mobile phone industry is no mean feat, promoting an unusual product in an advanced technology market is even harder. This is why the promotional video made for Sharps new launch of the Touch Wood SH-08C handset, was even more impressive.
 
It’s incredible to think of the trouble Drill, Inc. went through in order to assemble the pieces necessary for a wooden ball to trickle down a home grown marimba, particularly in the midst of Kyushu, Japan’s woodlands. A concept that our Creative Director – Visual Communications, Kev, was particularly impressed by.
 
To create this beautiful piece of kinetic sculpture, it would have taken great determination, ingenuity and skill to get the angle, levelling, timing and pitch of each ‘plunk’ on the wooden blocks just right. Resulting in a stunning end-result, that leaves viewers with a new found appreciation for technology and nature alike, two categories which aren’t typically associated with each other.
 
This principle is something that Design Original can relate too. Taking great care, attention and skill to create something wonderful, is a theory that is applied to every project that we work on. Always paying particular attention to create unique work that exceeds expectations.
